Cat years made simple

Cat Life Stages

Cats move through life stages quickly at first, then more steadily. This guide explains the stage names used on Kitten Years.

The simple life-stage model used here

StageApprox. ageWhat it usually means
KittenBirth to under 1 yearFast growth, learning, play, early routines, and close care.
Young adult1 to 6 yearsActive adult life, steady routines, play, prevention, and healthy habits.
Mature adult7 to 10 yearsStill very much a cat's regular life, but changes become worth watching.
Senior11 to 14 yearsComfort, mobility, weight, appetite, dental care, and litter box habits matter more.
Super senior15 years and olderGentle routines, easy access, and veterinary support are especially important.

Why different sources use slightly different stages

Cat life-stage names are not always identical from one organization to another. Some use a simple veterinary model. Others break kittenhood and senior life into more detailed stages. Kitten Years keeps the public-facing version simple so the calculator and age pages are easy to understand.

The important idea is not the exact name. The important idea is that a kitten, a two year old cat, a nine year old cat, and a sixteen year old cat usually need different kinds of attention.
